Tony Perez (#476)

Here is Reds' RBI machine Tony Perez. By the time this card was issued in mid-summer, Perez had already moved over to 3rd base.

I just recently posted his 1966 card on another blog, so I won't repeat myself here. What I wanted to do was show the unusual Cincinnati Reds' uniform from that time period.

Besides the "vest look" (which was also used by the Indians, Athletics, and Pirates), look at his name. Unlike a "normal" uni, the player's name is UNDER the number. I wonder if any other team used this same layout?

Sorry for the late comment. Love that card. Something great about the colors and the tight composition. Never was a big fan of the vest.

David,

I don't necessarily like the vests, but I do like the pre-1967 white hats.

On cards that have a closer shot, you can see the red pinstripes on the cap.

I was also a fan of cards that showed a position other than what the player was currently playing (3B for Perez).

Very cool to actually see the name under the number. I think the Reds were the first team to put the name of the player on the back of the jersey. I'm not sure exactly when that happened, but I think it was mid-60's.

Mark,

After I posted this, I got to thinking that maybe the name was under the number because without shoulders on the jersey, there is no room for long names above the numbers (See Saltalamacchia!)

Believe Veeck's Chisox were the first to put names on jerseys, '59 or '60.
